Engineering Leadership

Role: Lead instructor and course developer.
I developed and instruct the present version of 6.9120, a
discussion-intensive course on Engineering Leadership (EL) that's part of MIT's Gordon Engineering Leadership Program (GEL). I've led the course each semester since Fall 2014, and was joined in 2020 by co-instructor Elizabeth Schanne. This course pairs with an experiential learning-based "Engineering Leadership Lab," where students put concepts into practice and receive feedback and assessment. EL's predecessor course was a condensed-format class in MIT's January term. In the present expanded Fall/Spring format, student learning is facilitated in 24 instructional modules that each feature pre-reading/ viewing, in-class activities, discussion, and debrief of the associated leadership lab. The course enrolls over 100 students per semester across four weekly class sections.

Engineering Design and Rapid Prototyping

Role: Co-lead instructor; Course project developer.
I joined Engineering Design and Rapid Prototyping (16.810) in 2021, taking the lead on revamping the class's central design/build/test project. One of 16.810's originators, Oli de Weck, continues to teach in the class with me and Elizabeth Schanne. We have expanded the course to be open to a School of Engineering-wide audience and it now counts for the GEL program's Design and Innovation Leadership Requirement. 16.810 is team-based. Student teams embark on a multi-objective optimization design challenge. They construct multiple iterations of fully functional prototypes, test them against requirements in a lab environment, and refine their designs as part of an optimization process. The course features an integral design competition in the realistic context of pursuing an industry contract award.

Course Development Projects

MIT GradEL Curriculum Expansion

Following from a foundational gift from Daniel Riccio to grow MIT's Graduate Engineering Leadership Program in 2022, I've served as Academic Director within a collaborative team tasked with building the curriculum and course offerings. Alongside Program Director Tony Hu, and with individual instructors, I've developed course proposals for GradEL's new academic courses, many of which have now become permanent MIT subjects (e.g., 6.9240, 6.9250, etc.; ongoing).

Longitudinal Assessment in Engineering Leadership

With colleague Alex Rokosz and others, I've led the development of a self-efficacy based longitudinal system for assessing engineering leadership capability growth in undergraduate and graduate program cohorts. A sequence of assessments extend from pre-program, to mid- and post-program, to post-graduation (alumni) years.

Learning Modules in Engineering Ethics

With collaborators across programs and departments, I have been part of a group of MIT educators developing learning content in Engineering Ethics over several years (see: media). Group activities and discussion prompts tend to insert student teams into dilemmas with no specific clear path to resolution, and in which multiple values or decision frameworks must be considered in parallel.

Experiential Learning Design at MIT GEL

GEL program students work in teams each week on 2-hour micro-challenges in the "Engineering Leadership Lab," for which I was an instructor from 2013-15. Program colleagues before, with, and after me have worked together to develop a set of teamwork and leadership-focused challenges, which can be design-build based, role-play based, or a combination. As current instructor of the adjacent seminar class, I continue to collaborate on lab designs and revisions. Lab designs in which I've taken a lead role have included: advocacy in engineering, organizational culture, ethics, systems thinking, and others.
