  • Overseeing continuous review and evaluation of engineering leadership program curricula, including design of program assessments, planning for new course development, and authorship of new course proposals (through approval)

  • Leading the program data analysis function for TLC

  • Conducting engineering education research in areas of engineering leadership pedagogy, experiential learning programmatic assessment, and engineering career pathways; presenting regularly at conferences

  • Teaching 6.9120 - Engineering Leadership (details)

  • Teaching 16.810 - Eng. Design & Rapid Prototyping (details)

  • Developing and leading recurring workshop sessions (details)

2021 - 2024

Associate Academic Director and Senior Lecturer

During this stage of my time at MIT, my work consisted of a mix of teaching, research, and development of program components. I collaborated on several new course design projects, including grant-funded initiatives.

  • Developed and launched a longitudinal assessment system for student learning and post-graduation outcomes that is now integral to TLC programs' operation (details)

  • Revamped and re-launched 16.810, Engineering Design and Rapid Prototyping, teaching it regularly since 2022, and developed a new student project component (details)

  • Taught 6.9120, Engineering Leadership, continuously (four sections per semester) (details)

  • Collaborated on development of an Experiential Ethics summer course at MIT (24.133), co-leading the development of the curriculum and the design of a training program for graduate student section instructors (details)

2013 - 2021

Lecturer

My initial work at MIT focused on program facilitation, teaching, and educational design, including pioneering new content in experiential learning for engineering leadership. I held several roles during this period:

  • Lecturer and course developer (2014 - onward): 6.9120 Engineering Leadership (EL). I led the revamp of EL from a condensed-format January term course to a Fall/Spring semester format spanning 24 learning modules, serving as primary instructor thereafter

  • Lecturer in the MIT Professional Education (2014 - onward): modules in Engineering Leadership for Emerging Leaders series on topics including stakeholder management, risk assessment, team building, and project management

  • Student programs facilitator (2013 - 2018): Led several components of the Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program's (GEL's) student programming, such as a mentor-pairing initiative and industry partnering initiatives for special guest visits and for internship recruitment

  • Co-Instructor and educational designer (2013 - 2015): 6.9110 Engineering Leadership Lab (ELL). In addition to guiding student participants and activity facilitators in ELL, I led the design of several of the lab's 2-hour format team challenges, including: advocacy in engineering, ethics, organizational culture, systems thinking, and others

2015 - 2018

Researcher, Engineering Workforce Dynamics

Conducted research on engineering workforce formation, including characterizing educational and career pathways, assessing student career preparedness and awareness, and examining factors related to career outcomes and advancement.

  • Through large-scale systematic review, developed and peer-reviewed a contemporary typology of engineering and engineering-related work (details)

  • Conducted a randomized controlled survey experiment examining engineering students' career choice factors at nine participating universities across the U.S. (details)

2004 - 2013

2009 - 2013

BAE Systems

Hardware Engineering Manager

I led Hardware Engineering departments in areas of aircraft electronic systems design/development and aircraft systems integration and testing. Departments included Electrical, Firmware, and Mechanical engineers and ranged in size from 12 - 17 direct reports. Beyond personnel development and management, my Hardware Engineering Manager responsibilities included:

  • Technology assessment and project bidding/planning, including proposal writing for multimillion dollar government and commercial contracts

  • Hardware engineering functional management, including responsibility for engineering outcomes (e.g., schedule, design performance, requirements compliance, and cost)

  • Staffing and staff planning; personnel assignments across a portfolio of 8-10 concurrent programs

  • Serving as Hardware Engineering technical liaison for clients, including facilitating client design reviews and leading rapid root cause/corrective action investigations

2004 - 2009

Mechanical Engineer (Principal, Sr., II, I)

Prior to entering engineering management, I held a range of mechanical engineering roles that spanned the system design/development/qualification lifecycle. Key examples include:

  • Developed installation designs for new aircraft electronic systems, including aircraft and airframe modifications and their substantiating analyses; prepared design submittal packages for safety and regulatory approvals

  • Conducted mechanical design of ruggedized airborne electronics products, including design layout, analyses of structural, thermal, and vibration performance, and prototyping complete hardware designs for evaluation

  • Led supplier design and production sourcing initiatives for speciality sub-assemblies

  • Led a team in developing in-field system testing methods, inclusive of the design and fabrication of a suite of new field test equipment (hardware and software) for aircraft ground and flight testing

  • Oversaw transition-to-production initiatives for several aircraft electronics products or assemblies, ensuring rapid factory issue mitigation and successful production ramp-up

  • Developed and executed a system qualification testing plan for a new system design, including performance testing under environmental conditions and operational cycling
